Herbert Macaulay died in Kano, aged eighty two. Characteristically, he died on a nation-wide tour of Nigeria, his most ambitious yet, campaigning against the 1945 Richards Constitution and what became known in the popular press as the Four Obnoxious Ordinances. By this time he had joined forces with Dr Nnamdi Azikiwe,a newly arrived, American-trained fire brand nationalist . Macaulay and Azikiwe, who was popularly known as Zik formed the NCNC, which emerged as one of his strongest political party. Its power lasted until well after independence. Herbert Macaulay has come to be revered as the father of Nigeria nationalism . He was patron of innumerable organizations to which he gave intellectual power and he strongly supported the idea of a united Nigeria. Macaulay was buried in Lagos on 11 May 1946. Delegation came from all over Nigeria for his burial. Madam Alimou Pelewura, leader of 10,000 market women in Lagos ordered all markets in the state closed for two days in Herbert Macaulay’s honour- apparently the highest possible. A crowd of 100,000 accompanied his body to the cemetery of ikoyi. Virtually all ethnic or voluntary associations in Nigeria sent wreaths and performed traditional dances and funeral rites. For three months after he died various societies held weekly ceremonies connected with his funeral obsequies.

🇬🇧 Arch of Septimius Severus, Leptis Magna, Lybia.
The Arch of Leptis Magna was erected in 202 AD, on the occasion of the return of the emperor Septimius Severus from the victorious war in the East and his tenth anniversary of the reign. The Severian arch, built as tetrapylon, was placed at the entrance of the city and marked the intersection of the two most significant urban roads, but, being elevated by some step with respect to them, it was not accessible to the chariots, thus posing as a sumptuous urban ornament, devoid of functional value. The core of the structure was made of limestone blocks covered with a marble face. The sculptural apparatus, unlike the other African arches, presents a large number of political, religious and civil subjects related to the Severian propagand: particularly notable are the major reliefs of the four fronts of the attic representing the Emperor, Julia Domna, Caracalla and Geta in a series of typical scenes of triumph and sacrifice.

We had a great surprise at the winery, with a visit by Marcelo's very special friend Valerie! Valerie was the Real Estate Agent who helped Marcelo buy the Doffo property back in 1997 and to add to the surprise, Valerie brought with her a bottle from Marcelo's very first vintage. The 2002 Mistura! These two old friends laughed and reminisced over the 15 year old wine, which tasted better than ever. A memorable afternoon for all of us! #doffowinery#drinktemecula#family#heritage#legacy#winemakers#temeculavalleywines
