One of my favorite things to watch is a dog doing what they were bred to do, but small reminders of the bond you form with your pet always catch my eye. There’s almost nothing that makes me smile more than watching a high drive working dog turn to their owner for a scratch on the head.

This is what deforestation looks like. After the Amazon reached dramatic peaks of deforestation in 1995 and 2004, the rise of environmental movements drew international attention to curb the degradation. Yet, in 2016 rates of deforestation once again increased sharply. In a photo series titled "Amazon: Paradise Threatened," Daniel Beltrá documents the new wave of destruction across the Amazon in Brazil. This photo was part of a series by Beltrá nominated in the Environmental Stories category for the World Press Photo Foundation's annual photo content. The winners will be announced at an awards show in Amsterdam on April 12, but, the foundation said, each project brought necessary stories to life for people around the globe.
